The best colors for spring 2019 - take your pick of 16 bright and muted colors | 40plusstyle

When you put together an outfit or buy new clothes, what’s the major thing that attracts you to those pieces?

Often it’s the color.

There are some colors we are just drawn to.

Often, that’s because we know, either through testing and trying, or because we’ve had colors professionally done and know that there are certain shades which suit us best.

Other times, it’s because we are drawn to a certain color as a mood booster, or because we want to create a more sophisticated vibe on a certain day, or we want to blend in or stand out from the crowd.

There certainly were beautiful colors and neutrals on the runways for spring and summer 2019.

Some felt more autumnal than traditionally spring.

Here are some of the hues to dig out of the back of your closet, or to look out for if you’re purchasing something new.

Bright yellow

What could say sunshine more clearly than a bold shade of yellow? Many designers decided to opt for marigold or sunflower hues in their shows.

I loved the way Dries Van Noten mixed yellows with blues, whites and blacks for a look which felt very modern and clean.

Living coral

The color experts at Pantone have named Living Coral as their color of 2019.

And, I have to say, I can’t disagree. Coral can be such a beautiful hue to wear during spring and summer.

It goes particularly well with whites and metallics, and can also be worn with everything from olive green to navy blue, purple to with your favorite jeans.

This shade can be fiery or it can be pastel, and works well with all skin tones.

Sage or minty green

A new color trend this spring, pale minty or sage greens are another great color for spring.

It is a color which does have the potential to wash out your skin tone, however, so make sure you choose the right shade of green for you or add a scarf or necklace in your best color.

Beautiful bright blues

A vibrant shade of blue was the hue of choice for many designers for spring. It works so well with other flattering spring colors, such as white and yellow.

Or baby blues

If you don’t want to opt for a bright blue, you could decide to go for a pastel shade instead.

Neon

Definitely not a trend for the wallflowers, many designers opted for bright neon hues that were last on trend in the 80s. Opt for any shade of blue, pink, yellow or green – just so long as it’s bright.

You could always choose neon accessories if it’s too much for you.

Bright red

Red is usually a color associated with the festive season. But it can work just as beautifully for spring and summer. For a fresh feel, you could team your red with white.

Orange

As well as the coral-pink shade seen on the runways, there were also pastel and bright shades of orange. These shades went well with navy, gray and white.

Lavender and violet

Ultraviolet was named the color of the year for 2018, and purples aren’t going anywhere for 2019. Violet was still all over the runways for spring 2019.

Deep olive or emerald greens

If you don’t want to go for a pale sale or minty green, then you could opt for a deeper jewel-hued green or olive hue. There were about a squillion shades on the catwalks, so any green goes this Spring.

Burgundy

Another shade usually associated with Fall has made its way to the Spring runways, so don’t put your burgundies to the back of your closet just yet.

You could team your burgundy with red or with terracotta, as shown at Valentino.

50 shades of beige

Beige can definitely be a hard color to wear. I think it’s because beige is one of those colors that is thought of as an “old lady” color.

Perhaps it might feel better if you come up with a different name. Oatmeal perhaps? Taupe?

But, whatever you call it, tans and beiges can actually create a very luxurious feel. It’s about getting the fabrics right. Go for drapey fabrics which flow beautifully, for leathers, suedes and trench coats for a look with is modern.

You could add a bright red like at Burberry.

Toffee or chocolate brown

Deeper than beige, and another color not usually associated with spring and summer, browns were shown on the catwalks of Max Mara, Chloe, Jill Sander and Tod’s to name but a few. Some went for a dark caramel, while others went for a dark chocolate.

What made them beautiful was the fluidity of the garments. I think if you’re going for browns during spring and summer, it’s best to keep an element of drape or softness in your outfit to prevent it from looking too autumnal.

Crisp, clean whites

It goes without saying that white and off-white was a popular neutral for spring and summer. You could opt for an all-white outfit with a pop of color as shown at Alberta Ferretti.

Silver and metallics

Metallics were showcased for both day and evening, but I like the idea of using silver as daywear by teaming it with gray denim, as shown at Isabel Marant.

Monochrome

Of course, you can always mix your neutrals. Monochrome was a hugely popular on the catwalks and would look beautiful worn with red accessories.
