After a year at home, your high heels may be in the back of the closet. And, that’s okay! Comfort was definitely on the minds of designers when it came to 2021 shoe trends in the spring fashion shows.
You’ll see below my round up of the best shoe trends from the “runways” for the upcoming season. There were plenty of flats, sneakers, sandals and boots – as well as a few heels – so you should find something to suit your style.
Let’s take a look at some of the styles and themes. Do you already have any of these in your closet? Or might you be treating yourself to a new pair of shoes this season?
Shoe trends 2021: Greek sandals

It was a little surprising to see shoes with “fiddly” fastenings like all the laces required for Greek-style sandals, given that many of us are looking for shoes which we can easily slip on to go for a walk or run a few errands outside the house at the moment.
However, it could be that designers were longing for a Greek vacation and decided to let their shoes do the talking! Chanel (center) opted for a nod to Greek styling but kept styling simple, whereas other designers chose lace-ups.
Sneakers and sneaker inspired

Less surprising were the sneakers on display on the “runways”. While some designers like Tod’s opted for very traditional sneakers, others used sneakers as the starting point for inspiration for their shoe designs.
2021 shoe trends: rainboots

Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini – Koché – Celine
Many of us are still experiencing winter weather right now and many parts of the world are in “lockdown,” so getting out into the great outdoors is an important part of the day.
So, it was welcome to see practical, yet stylish, rainboots in the spring fashion shows.
Knee high and over-the-knee boots

Chanel – Louis Vuitton – Roksanda
Boots are always an important part of your spring wardrobe. They keep you warm, add style, and are a great way to make sure you can still wear your skirts and dresses during the cooler months.
For spring, the main boot trends were over-the-knee, slouchy, and cowboy styles.
spring shoe trend: Menswear inspired

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi – Burberry – Isabel Marant
Practical, and stylish, many women’s shoes for spring were inspired by menswear. Look out for loafer and oxford styles.
Wear with anything from your jeans and pants to skirts and boots.
Folded heels

Salvatore Ferragamo – Versace – Prada
Of course, heels weren’t completely missing from the spring/summer fashion shows.
You can take your pick from high stilettos, to more wearable kitten, and smaller, heels.
One of the major trends was for heels which fold in on themselves for a structural effect.
Pointed flats

Valentino – Prada – AZ Factory
If you prefer flats, but you still want to add a touch of glamour, then pointed flats could be the answer.
spri2021 shoe trends: clogs

Louis Vuitton – Hermès – Louis Vuitton
An unexpected style on the catwalks for the new season was the clog. However, rather than traditional wooden styles, designers chose leather with clog style platforms, or opted to add studs.
Comfy sandals

Christian Dior – Tod’s – Christian Dior
As the weather starts to warm up, sandals are an essential. Even if it isn’t possible to head off on vacation this year, a pair of sandals will be perfect for days at home.
Flatforms

To add some height without wearing heels, you could choose a platform, or flatform style.
However, flatforms can be tricky to walk too far in as they tend to be rigid, meaning you can’t bend your foot in the usual way.
They can, however, look very stylish with jeans, wide-leg pants, and with your summer dresses.
Netted and knotted

Versace – Fendi – Christian Dior
Fishnet featured in the clothing trends for spring, and also on shoes and boots. Another micro trend was for shoes with twisted, or knot, detailing.
Chains and crystals

Versace – Victoria Beckham – Versace
If you want to add a bit of edge to your look, or some extra glamour, then look for shoes with some embellishment.
Victoria Beckham chose chunky chain details, while Versace’s show featured both chains and blingy crystals.
Which of these shoe trends do you already have in your closet? Or which might you treat yourself to for the upcoming season?
